Holika Dahan is done just a day before Holi, the story behind which is of devotee Prahlad. According to this legend, Prahlad, the son of the demon king Hiranyakashyap, was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, who was completely new to Hiranyakashyap. He called his sister Holika, who had the boon of not burning in fire, and asked her to sit on the burning pyre with Prahlad. Holika did the same but devotee Prahlad was saved but his aunt Holika got burnt because of misusing her boon. That’s why the festival of Holika Dahan is celebrated which gives the message that good always wins.
By the way, this festival is very old and its detailed description is also found in Narada Purana and Bhavishya Purana. King Harsha has also mentioned Holikatsav in his work Ratnavali. Apart from this, carvings celebrating Holi are also seen on the walls of many old temples, such as in an old temple of Hampi, the capital of Vijay Nagar, carved in about 16th century.
